The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
